Rotary Club Chandigarh Midtown

June 6,1977 was a golden letter day in the history of Rotary Club Chandigarh Midtown.On this day the charter dated May 18,1977,Club no. 15228) was presented by the then District Governer Rtn. Raja Sahoo to our Ist President Rtn. Dr. B.D. Gupta and secretary Rtn. Jawahar Gupta(Now Justice).

The chief commissioner Shri T.N. Chaturvedi was the chief guest on this colourful function and 38 charter members were inducted by DG Raja Saboo. Since then the club has grown by leaps and bounds to reach the membership of 135.

Club was sponsored by R.C. Chandigarh. PP Rtn. Lalit Suri as GSR provided all assistance in settling the club on a sound footing.

Twenty seven years of dedicated efforts by Rotarians committed to the cause of the society they live in and the well being of humanity were able to touch the lives of the down trodden, -have-nots and leprosy affected patients.

From small beginning to big achievements, that in essence is the saga of R.C. Chandigarh Midtown.

Amongst the highlights in the 30 years history are: -

1977-78 Charter Pres. B.D. Gupta
-Setting up a LIBRARY & READING ROOM in the Industrial Workers' colony in Sector 30 Chandigarh

(1978-79) President R.N. Dogra
-Tree Plantation, anti-malaria campaign.

(1979-80).Pres. J.L. Gupta
-Free medical Camps.

(1980-81). President B.L. Ramsisaria
-Adopted Leper's Colony in Sector 47: Free dispensary set up for the inmates. The project was internationally recognized and the report was published in "The Rotarian" magazine .

(1981-82) Pres R.S. Chandgothia
-Blood Donation Camp organized .

(1982-83). President M.L. Sarin
-Rotaract club of Chandigarh Midtown chartered .

(1983-84).Pres. Late. B.S.Bindra
-Inter District event on National Integration hosted by the club when President of India Giani Zail Singh was the Chief Guest.

(1984-85) Pres S.L. Vohra
-Hosted District Conference.

-PETS hosted by the club.

-Established Rotary Legal Aid Center in Sector 17,Chandigarh.

(1987-88) Pres. Anil Mehan
-Organized First Lok Adalat.

(1988-89) Pres. D.P.Khandelia
-42 low cost shelters in Lepers' colony.

(1989-90) President Dr. O.N. Mathur
-Constructed an all weather shed at cremation ground, Sector 25,Chandigarh.

(1990-91) President K.T.S. Tulsi
-Set up a Drug De-addiction center in Police Hospital, Sector 26,Chandigarh.

(1991-92)-Pres. Harish Sethi
-Donated a Cardiac Van to General Hospital, Chandigarh.

(1992-93) Pres. Shaju Peter
-Donated a Refrigerated Centrifuge imported from USA for Rs. 4.25 lacs to the Blood Bank Society , Chandigarh (PGI) under WCS Programme.

(1993-94) Pres. Rtn. Justice Surinder Singh
-Constructed R.C. canopy for pitcher breaking ceremony at cremation ground, Sector 25,Chandigarh.

(1994-95) Pres. Subhash Bindra
-Donated a Blood Mobile Van costing about Rs.5.00 lacs to Blood Bank Society of Chandigarh.

(1995-96) Pres. Col. A.J.S. Gill
-Donated EMP-EG System imported from USA for Rs.7.00 lacs to detect audio visual and neuro muscular disorders in children under WCS project.

(1996-97) Pres. J.L.Mahajan
-Rehabilitation of 65 handicapped persons with prosthetic aids.

(1997-98).Pres. Ajit Gulati
-Disbursed US$10,000 under Milano Sud-Est-Micro loan project under WCS to needy entrepreneurs.

(1998-99).Pres. Keshoram Gupta
-Artificail limbs, callipers, tricycles etc. to 360 handicapped persons under a multicontinental WCS programme with an outlay of Rs.6.5 lakhs.

(1999-2000) Pres. Capt. Moni Kahlon
-
Literacy & Numeracy for Women, New WCS Micro Loan begun. Children Opportunity Grant-Project at Little Flowers School Manimajra; Hosted PETS & SETS; Foster Parenting of Martyr's child.

(2000-2001) Pres. Dr. Mrs. Vanita Gupta
Adopted Sarangpur village, constructed community toilets block for the inhabitants of Village Sarangpur. Hosted Interecity. Organised a rally on awareness of human rights. Night school for slum children. Vocational Training centre. Drinking Water for school childern. Eye camp with IOL under avoidable bindness. Health for leprosy. Hepatitus B Immunization. Human Rights. Gujrat Relief. Youth exchange student from Canada for One year. Involvement of Rotary families.

(2001-2002) Pres. Indrajeet Sengupta

Braile project completed at the institute for the blind, sector 26, Chandigarh. Internet club formed. Medical aid for lepers, continued vocational training centre. Education for th edisadvantaged. Hepatitus B camp at little flowerschool. hosted inner club Golf tournament and First Distt. 3080 Rotary youth programme for enrichment

(2002-2003) Pres. Dr. Balram Gupta

Avoidable blindness (998 persons trated and 127 operated under WCS project. Artificial limbs to handicaps. established Vocational training centre at Dhanas

(2003-2004) Pres. Dr. S.K. Sharma
Data processing unit established for eight (65-85%) disabled youths. Thousand improved cookstoves installed. Coffee machine installed at Cheshire home. Eye camp organized. 50 Intracular lenses provided. Multidisciplinary medical camps organided for senior citizens. Orthopaedic footwear provided to 30 crippled leprosy effceted patients. Water conservation and sanitation projects. Project lifeline for critical poor patients. Night school for working childern continued. Vocational training centre for girls and rural women continued. Artificial limbs and rehabilitation project. Free books and uniforms to disadvantaged childern. Blood donation camp.

2004-2005 Pres. Pallav Mukherjee

PP Shaju Peter elected DGN 2007-08. Club adjudged as ‘Best Club’ of the District. Highest contribution to the Tsunami Relief Fund. Every Rotarian Every Year target completed.

2005-2006 Pres. Er. R.K. Goyal

Organised a plumbing training course for 15 unemployed needy young boys of village Khudda Ali Sher and surrounding villages. 15 girl students from underpriviledged families were given home care nursing training. A WCS project of providing free school text books to approx. 5000 needy students with a total outlay of US$22,000/- in collaboration with Rotary Club of Gold Coast, New York, RID 7250 was drawn up and registered with the Rotary Foundation. An all-girls Rotaract club was chartered in Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45.

2006-2007 President Dr. V.J.S. Vohra

RI Director Rtn. Noraseth Pathmanand was the Guest of Honour for the Installation Ceremony in July 2006. RI President Elect Rtn. Wilfrid Wilkinson inaugurated the WCS Literacy project on 15th May 2007 in which 16000 text books worth Rs Ten Lac were distributed to the needy students of Govt Schools. Computer Training Centre was established at Saket Rehabilitation Centre, Chandi Mandir by giving 6 computers for training 72 handicapped students. Jobs were given to 31 handicapped persons at Call Centres in Mohali & Chandigarh. Vocational Training Centre set up at villiage Khuda Ali Sher. Eye Camps for cataract surgery project in collaboration with 2 Rotary Clubs of UK, Wollaton Park and Castle Donnington. All 52 weekly bulletins published during the year, were uploaded regularly on our website.
